Welding Method
Submerged Arc Welding: Process, Advantages and Application Areas
In Submerged Arc Welding, a continuously fed wire electrode melts beneath a layer of granular flux. The arc burns entirely under the flux, which shields the weld zone from atmospheric oxygen and distributes heat evenly. Simultaneously, a layer of slag forms, stabilizing the molten pool. As the wire melts into the molten pool, it fuses with the base material to form a dense and uniform weld seam beneath the flux.
The closed flux blanket permits the use of high welding currents, enabling deep penetration and increased welding speeds.
The process is used to economically join thick plates and components. Typical applications include shipbuilding, heavy machinery manufacturing, and industrial plant construction.
